Shaping of Technologies
Driving in to work this morning, I was suddenly struck by the complexity of communication technologies when an NPR host began reading through a set of e-mails she had received as part of the show’s programming.
NPR has what I feel to be, one of the premiere Web sites fueled by audio programming. They stream all of their feature programming from the site, and users can subscribe to their content with RSS and podcast feeds. Aesthetically, it is a joy to navigate around the site because of their focus on usability and simplicity.
I didn’t mean for this to become a testimonial for their Web strategy, as much as I wanted to describe my impression that their is a brand, NPR, and they have a fluid distribution strategy that matches quite well with the fluid nature of communication technologies.
The problem begins when people begin to look at a medium as a static and individual thing, and formulate dogma for how best to work within the medium.
That’s just not the nature of media.
